June 2019 – Orlando, Florida
It was an experience unlike any other – our largest AAU Gymnastics National Championships were held in Orlando Florida in June 2019 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. 2700 athletes competed in the competition which included Levels 1-8 as well as all Xcel and Open Optional levels.
Of the athletes competing, there were over 25 Arizona gymnasts including district director Dru Heffington in the ladies division. All athletes, families, and coaches reported having a great competition and a very memorable experience!
Nationals truly is a one of a kind experience, complete with an amazing organization being supported by every penny, nickel, dime and dollar and an awesome night with an athlete celebration for everyone to let loose!
This year, AAU Gymnastics chose the organization Girls On The Run to support with donations. Gyms from all over the country who came to compete had decorated shoeboxes with various takes on the organization supported. They collected everyone’s loose change and brought it with them! Athletes had the opportunity to sign a banner and additional donations were taken during the competition. AAU Gymnastics matched those donations dollar for dollar helping us give over $5500 to this great organization!
All athletes, families, and coaches were invited to the free athlete celebration, which included an opportunity for the athletes to march in by district and be recognized by the audience. There was special music, Polynesian dancers, a fire dancer and even a special appearance by the one and only Mickey Mouse! It was great to have athletes participate in the celebration including one athlete leading everyone in the competition pledge and one lighting the torch at the end of the ceremony! It’s estimated that about 6000 attended the celebration – it was electric in there!
You’ll find some great pictures here of the competition, the AAU Cares booth, the awards, and the athlete celebration. We look forward to seeing you in Savannah, Georgia in June 2020 for another unbelievable Nationals experience!
